First lady hands over Navy's Thalassemia drug infusion systems to Government hospitals

The First Lady, Madam Shiranthi Wickramasinghe Rajapaksa handed over a consignment of low-cost Thalassemia Drug infusion Systems produced by the Sri Lanka Navy to Government Hospitals at a function held at the Naval Headquarters yesterday (16th May).

The Infusion System is essential for Thalassemia patients for the removal of excessive iron deposits gathered in vital organs as a result of frequent blood transfusions which are needed for the treatment of the disease. The infusion system is donated to hospitals free of charge as a part of Sri Lanka Navy's social responsibility projects.

Dissanayake, Commander of the Navy, Air Marshal H.D. Abeywickrama, Commander of the Air Force, N.K. Illangakoon, Inspector General of the Police and Rear Admiral Ananda Peiris, Director General (DG) of Civil Defence Force (CDF) were on hand at Galle Face esplanade Wednesday (16) morning to review preparations and rehearsals, related to the conduct of the National Victory Day parade, scheduled for May 19, 2012.

War hero receives new house from MoD SVU

The Seva Vanitha Unit of the Ministry of Defence handed over a newly constructed house to a war hero of the Sri Lanka Army at a function held at Udumulla, Katuwatte in Dodanduwa, today (16th May).

Mrs. Ioma Rajapaksa, Chairperson of Defence Ministry's Seva Vanitha Unit, handed over the keys of the newly constructed house to the new owner, Staff Sergeant MDC Lasantha of the Sri Lanka Army Singha Regiment.

USAID commends resettlement programme

The Sri Lankan Government's highly successful programme to resettle the internally displaced people of the North and East came under praise when Trekor Hublin, Deputy Director of USAID met the Minister of Resettlement Gunarathna Weerakoon at his ministry on Monday (14 May).

Mr.Hublin commended the Sri Lanka Government's genuine efforts in resettling the displaced people back in their former places in the once war ravaged North and East. The Government's policy for resettlement is transparent and firm.

Title deeds for resettled IDPs

Action will be taken to issue titled deeds to a majority of the resettled, said Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development Minister Douglas Devananda at a ceremony recently to mark the opening of a new building for the Co-operative Society and another for the pre- school at Illavalai Vasanthapuram area in the Tellipallai Divisional Secretariat Division.

He also handed over renovated houses to the newly resettled.

KKS cement factory to resume work
16-05-2012

All measures have been taken by the State Resources and Enterprise Development Ministry to resume operations at the Kankesanthurai cement factory in the near future. The Lanka Cement Corporation has already earned profits around Rs 7 to 8 million while settling the debt burden of Rs 234 million, State Resources and Enterprise Development Minister Dayasritha Tissera said.

According to the minister, the government has allocated Rs 5 billion to establish a new cement manufacturing plant with the capacity of manufacturing 250 to 500 tons and a packing division.

Traffic arrangements for Victory Day rehearsals

Police Headquarters informs motorists that the Galle Face roundabout to Old Parliament will be closed for traffic from 6.30 am and 4.30 pm from May 14 to 18 in view of the rehearsals for the Victory Day celebrations to be held at Galle Face on Saturday (19th May).

Accordingly, vehicles traveling on Galle Road and heading towards Colombo Fort will be able to proceed after making a right from Colpetty Junction or Galle Face Junction.
