Leaders of many countries congratulated President Mahinda Rajapaksa on taking tremendous strides towards development in the aftermath of the 30-year conflict which claimed the lives of thousands of people belonging to all communities.

In congratulatory messages to the Lankan President and Prime Minister on the occasion of Sri Lanka's 64th Independence Day, they lauded the dynamic and charismatic leadership of President Mahinda Rajapaksa who saved the country from the scourge of terrorism.

"Our nation is fortunate to celebrate the 64th Independence Day with a genuine sense of dignity about freedom" stated H. E President and |C-in-C Mahinda Rajapaksa. "The country's achievements would be secured when opportunities for peace, co-existence as well as harmonious living are widened" he further stated in his message to the nation commemorating the 64th Independence Day on 04th Feb.

US- EU punishing us, small countries- President

As the United States' and European Union's combined sanction against Iran take effect, small nations like Sri Lanka are extremely worried said President Mahinda Rajapaksa to Foreign Journalists, yesterday( Jan 01), at the Temple Trees in Colombo.

Sri Lanka depends almost entirely on Iran for its crude oil supplies and the only refinery in the country, Sapugaskanda, can only process Iranian crude, the President stressed.

Navy assists St. Jude Annual Festival at K-Point

WASHINGTON - Ambassador Jaliya Wickramasuriya hosted a group of foreign correspondents here in a January 25 reception held at his residence, prompting a discussion of events in Sri Lanka since the end of the conflict against terrorism nearly three years ago.

The reception was the first in 2012 of the National Press Club's Foreign International Correspondents Committee's "Embassy Nights," a series of meetings with ambassadors in Washington to discuss pressing international issues.

Colombo district Independence celebrations

The Colombo district celebrations to mark Sri Lanka's 64th Independence Day will be held at the Colombo Town Hall grounds on February 4 at 8.30 am under the patronage of Western Province Governor Alavi Mowlana, the Colombo's Mayor M J M Muzzamil and Colombo District Secretary H T Kamal Padmasiri will also be present.

Highlights will include a parade by a group of 1,500 schoolchildren drawn from 20 leading schools and a cultural display.

Iranamadu Project gets 22 M US Dollar assistance

The International Fund for Agricultural Development will grant a 22.2 million U.S.Dollar loan to Sri Lanka to improve irrigation infrastructure and crop diversification, and help create new market opportunities for small holder farmers in Northern Province. These funds will be used for the Iranamadu development project.

Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa yesterday said that none of the Majors General directly involved in eelam war IV had made a testimony to any US lawyer, in New York in 2010, alleging extrajudicial killings of civilians, surrendering LTTE cadres and dissident journalists during eelam war IV.

"Those directly involved in the campaign are still in service. They'll never betray the country for personal benefit,"

THREE WHEELERS DONATION FOR DISABLED WAR HERO'S

Today (31st) morning at the premises of the Mahaveli Authority, Ranaviru Seva Authority  made another tremendous donation for the disabled war hero’s by distributing 15 three wheelers to a profitable loan with 5% interest with the hope of uplifting the life style of the disabled war heroes of the Sri Lanka Armed Services.

These Ranviru welfare programmes came to light under the direction of The Secretary of the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa and this noble work is handled by the Ranaviru Seva Authority.

Rs. two billion for Northern health deveplopmet

The Health Ministry received Rs. two billion from the Global Fund to develop health facilities in the Northern Province as a response to a request made by Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena. A massive development drive is to be implemented under a five year plan (2011 - 2016) to upgrade health facilities in the Northern Province, a Health Ministry spokesman said.

According to the spokesman, health facilities in the North Jaffna, Killinochchi, Mulaitivu, Mannar and Vavuniya districts are to be developed under the five year development plan.

Rs 21,000 million for Deyata Kirula

After the meeting held recently in the House of Commons, a young man who claimed to be Siobhain McDonagh’s researcher (and also to work for the Bank of Scotland, during a later conversation) agreed to send me video footage of attacks on hospitals. He claimed he had a lot, and this substantiated a clip he had prepared of Dr Shanmugarajah saying that the Sri Lankan forces were attacking the hospital at which he was working.
